Introduction

The planning system plays a key role in promoting housing and economic growth, whilst at the same time addressing climate change and securing nature conservation and recovery.

This five hour in-person course will give you an understanding of the essential principles and concepts that underpin the planning system including who makes the decisions; how these decisions are made; what works and uses require planning permission; how development is regulated and the consequences of breaching planning controls. Other related consenting regimes will also be explored and future developments and topical issues will be considered. The course will be interactive and will use examples from practice to illustrate the content that is covered.

  • What is ‘development’?
  • The development plan and material considerations
  • Planning permissions, planning conditions, planning obligations and CIL
  • The planning application process
  • Appeals, lawfulness and enforcement
  • Other related regimes including heritage, public rights of way and highways; trees and hedgerows; nature conservation; the advertisement regime, minerals planning and planning for major infrastructure
  • Topical issues and future developments
