Introduction

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 provided a definition of domestic abuse for the first time, specifically including economic abuse. The charity Surviving Economic Abuse estimates that 1 in 5 women in the UK have experienced economic abuse by a current or former partner in the past 12 months. The consequences for victims can include assets being transferred to a partner or family member’s name, significant debt run up by a partner in their name, loss of employment and reduction in earning capacity.

This webinar considers the decision in the recent case of DP v EP (Conduct: Economic Abuse: Needs) [2023], where the court held the conduct fell within the definition of economic abuse contained within the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and how cases involving economic abuse sit within previous case law in relation to conduct, including Watchell v Watchell, OG v AG and Dmitry Tsvetkov v Elsina Khayrova [2023].
