Introduction

From the moment an artwork leaves its usual location to be featured in an exhibition until its return, it is exposed to the risk of loss or damage. Mechanisms designed to cover such loss or damage are available to qualifying loans of artworks to cultural institutions in the UK.

There also exist specific rules which a client lending an artwork to an exhibition needs to consider. For instance, for artworks subject to copyright protection in the UK, copyright laws may affect the marketing and publicity of the exhibition. Specific import and export rules can also apply. Lastly, some lenders will need to consider the risk of the artwork being seized whilst on loan.

This webinar will focus on loans, whether permanent or temporary, to public institutions in the UK.
