Introduction
This new virtual classroom seminar will explore tax issues frequently encountered by personal representatives (executors and administrators) in the course of administering a deceased’s estate.
The session will cover the relevant taxes that can arise during administration (mainly Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax) as well as issues relating to the inheritance tax due on the estate.
It will focus on practical issues faced by executors and administrators when it comes to tax on the estate, and how tax issues affect other aspects of administration.

- Making the IHT return and deadlines for payment
- Burden of IHT between beneficiaries
- Dealing with IHT on lifetime gifts, settled property and reservation of benefit
- Reducing IHT with fall in value relief
- Dealing with deeds of variation and appointments from discretionary trusts
- Disclaimers by beneficiaries
- Nil rate band discretionary trusts
- CGT issues on appointments and appropriations
- Sale of estate assets and CGT and SDLT issues
- Using CGT losses
- Income on estate assets
- Filing self-assessments and tax credits for beneficiaries
