Introduction

In the wake of the Grenfell disaster in June 2017 and the Inquest which closed in Autumn 2022, the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has instigated comprehensive action to shake up and reform the building of high-rise residential blocks, and ensure buildings are made safer, particularly for residents.

In July 2020 the draft Building Safety Bill was published, which requires HSE to establish a new buildings safety regulator, to implement the recommendations made in the 'Building a Safer Future' report by Dame Judith Hackitt (2018). In February 2021 the HSE announced its plans. The Building Safety Act itself received Royal Assent on 28 April 2022, and the provisions are coming into force in a piecemeal fashion due to its wide and deep impact.

The Building Safety Inspectorate, led by the Regulator, oversees all aspects of high-rise buildings, namely design, construction and occupation. Resident safety and security is enshrined as a top priority. As an independent body, the Regulator is empowered widely and able to give expert advice to all stakeholders of the industry, as well as to residents.

This 2-hour virtual classroom seminar outlines the key points about the Building Safety Regulator and the Inspectorate, its powers and responsibilities. It is suitable for those who:

  • Work in, or advise on, construction projects whether as client, designer, surveyor, adviser, or contractor (any tier)
  • Are responsible for risk management, finance/ funding, compliance or insurance
  • Are in-house lawyers to organisations in the residential building sector
  • Are involved in reporting/ liaison with HSE
  • Are part of the supply chain for residential buildings
